Casing on an arched window
The window in the photo above runs up past the second floor and ends in a half circle. Straight trim can't follow that, so the casing goes on in curved pieces.

Crown molding
Along the ceiling of a room, and across the top of a built-in. In this room both are there: the bookcase has its own crown, and the room's crown runs along the tray ceiling above it.
- Crown on the built-in turns the angled corners at the ceiling.
- Base molding at the floor ties the bookcase into the room's baseboard.
Crown on a built-in
On this media wall, the crown runs the full width and turns the clipped corners at each end, so the built-in looks like part of the ceiling and not a cabinet pushed against it.

Trim and crown questions
What is casing?
Casing is the trim around a window or door opening. On an arched window like the one in the foyer on this page, the casing has to follow the curve, so it comes in curved pieces instead of straight lengths.
Can a built-in have its own crown if the room already has crown?
Yes. The two-bay bookcase on this page has its own crown along the top, and the room keeps its crown along the ceiling above it.
What happens to crown at an angled corner?
It turns the corner with angled cuts instead of stopping. You can see it at both ends of the media wall and the bookcase on this page, where the ceiling corners are clipped.
