Rochester Hills homes, old and new
Rochester Hills only became a city in 1984, but the land has been lived on much longer. It started as Avon Township, organized in 1835, and the Avon Township area was the first European settlement in Oakland County, with settlers arriving in 1817.
That long history shows up in the houses. The Stony Creek Village Historic District on Washington Road, listed on the National Register in 1972, has 17 houses, mostly Greek Revival, from before the Civil War. Then there's Meadow Brook Hall on the Oakland University campus, a 110-room Tudor Revival mansion finished in 1929. Around both of them are decades of subdivisions.
What that means for the carpentry
- Trim, crown, and arched casing: an older farmhouse needs trim that looks like it's always been there, not a big-box profile that dates it to this year.
- Wall paneling and picture-frame molding: a two-story entry in a newer subdivision is a big flat wall. Picture-frame molding gives it a reason to be that tall.
- Custom built-ins: a family room with a TV and nowhere to put anything is exactly what a media wall is for.
- Stairs and railings: swapping builder-grade balusters for iron and a new handrail changes the whole entry.
Getting to you in Rochester Hills
Dequindre Road is the line between Rochester Hills and Shelby Township, and M-59 crosses it at the Dequindre interchange. For us, Rochester Hills is the next town over, not a trip.
