A small city with serious architecture

Bloomfield Hills had 4,470 people at the 2020 census. It became a village in 1927 and a city in 1929, largely to avoid being annexed into Birmingham. The median owner-occupied home is valued at about $947,900.

It's also where some of Michigan's best-known architecture lives. Cranbrook, much of it designed by Albert Kahn and Eliel Saarinen, has been a National Historic Landmark since 1989. Christ Church Cranbrook was consecrated in 1928. And two Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian houses are here: the Affleck House on Woodward, finished in 1941, and the Smith House, built in 1949 and 1950.
