Troy grew fast, and its houses show it
Troy incorporated on February 1, 1955, mostly to keep neighboring cities from annexing its land. Then it filled in. The population went from 19,402 in 1960 to 39,419 in 1970 and 67,102 in 1980. Today it's 87,294, as of the 2020 census.
That means a lot of Troy's homes went up in those decades. Troy also keeps two much older houses on the National Register: the Caswell House, an 1832 Greek Revival now at the Troy Historic Village on Wattles, and the Brooks Farm on Big Beaver, with its 1852 fieldstone farmhouse.
What we'd build in a Troy house
- Custom built-ins: one long empty wall, upstairs or down, is the perfect spot for a floor to ceiling bookcase or a media wall.
- Trim, crown, and arched casing: original trim from the 1960s or 70s can be replaced with taller base, real casing, and crown, room by room.
- Stairs and railings: an older staircase with spindles and a carpet runner can get new treads, a heavier rail, and iron balusters.
- Fireplace mantels: a brick fireplace with a thin shelf can get a full surround and mantel built around it.
Troy and Shelby Township
Troy doesn't touch Shelby Township. Rochester Hills and Sterling Heights sit between us. It's still close, and Troy is part of the Metro Detroit area we serve.
