One staircase, bottom to top
A 23 second walk up this staircase, from the front entry to the loft, before the finish goes on.
- Light wood treads with a rounded front edge, on every step.
- Square newel posts at the bottom and at the turn.
- Black iron balusters, straight ones mixed with rectangular loops, set into each tread.
- The same handrail and balusters carry across the loft upstairs.
Stairs and the rest of the house
A staircase usually lands in a foyer, and the foyer is where people notice trim first. That's the same work as our wall paneling and trim and crown.

Stair and railing questions
Iron balusters or wood?
Iron balusters are thinner than wood, so you see more of the room through the railing. The staircase on this page uses black iron balusters with rectangular loops against light wood treads and a wood handrail.
Does the railing upstairs have to match the stairs?
It doesn't have to, but it looks better when it does. On this job the same handrail and balusters run from the first step up and across the loft, so it reads as one railing.
What is a newel post?
The heavy post at the bottom of the stairs, at each turn, and at the ends of a railing. It holds the handrail. The newels on this staircase are square.
