What goes into this one
You're looking at it before paint, so every piece is still easy to tell apart.
- Legs and header. A flat surround that frames the tile on three sides.
- Plinth blocks. At the bottom of each leg, so it stands on the floor like furniture.
- Crown. A band of crown molding under the shelf, so the shelf looks supported.
- The shelf. Running past the legs on both ends.
- The tile. Left where it was. The mantel goes around it.
A mantel in a room with other trim
If the room already has crown, casing, or paneling, the mantel should look like it belongs to the same house. That's the same work as our trim and crown and wall paneling, and a mantel can sit between built-ins on either side.
What to send us for a mantel
- A photo of the fireplace straight on, with the floor and some wall above it in the shot.
- The width of the tile or brick surround, if you can measure it.
- Whether you're keeping the tile or changing it.
- Painted or stained, if you already know.
Fireplace mantel questions
Can a new mantel go around my existing tile?
The one on this page did. The marble tile surround and the hearth stayed where they were, and the new surround was built around them.
What are the blocks at the bottom of the legs?
Plinth blocks. They give each leg something to stand on, so the mantel looks planted on the floor instead of stopping short of it.
Paint-grade or stain-grade?
The surround in this photo is MDF, which is paint-grade: it takes paint smooth and has no grain to show. A stained mantel needs real wood or veneer on every surface you can see.
