A town with a long memory

Birmingham's original plat was recorded on August 25, 1836, and Rosewell T. Merrill named it after Birmingham, England. Some downtown buildings go back to the 1830s. The John W. Hunter House on West Maple, built in 1822 and on the National Register since 1972, is a Greek Revival house raised by an itinerant carpenter, George Taylor. It was the first frame house in Bloomfield Township.

The city had 21,813 people at the 2020 census and keeps a list of local historic districts, including Mill Pond, Baldwin Park, Bates Street, and the Merrill, Townsend, and Brown neighborhood.

What an older Birmingham house usually wants

Trim, crown, and arched casing: in an older house, new trim has to match the old, so we start with close photos of the casing, base, and crown that are already there.
Custom built-ins: a floor to ceiling bookcase with crown at the top is at home in an older living room or den.
Fireplace mantels: a mantel can be built to suit the age of the house, not the catalog.
Wall paneling and picture-frame molding: a dining room or study can take picture-frame molding that looks like it came with the house.
